Topical debate requested by a political group (S&D) (Rule 169) - State violence in Minneapolis and the rule of law in the United States (topical debate)

11 Febbraio, 2026

Madam President, I want to use this minute to send from here, from the European Parliament, all my and our solidarity to the families and friends of Renee Good and Alex Pretti.

Renee and Alex paid with their lives for what is right: standing against ICE; standing against raids, abductions and deportations; supporting neighbours in their own communities. That is what anti-fascism looks like today. We hold their memory in our hearts. Alex and Renee will always remain a powerful example.

In the United States, there is ICE, but here in Europe, there is Frontex. And because of their actions, the Mediterranean has become the deadliest migration route in the world. Only days ago, nearly 1 000 people lost their lives trying to cross it.

Anti-fascism from one side of the ocean to the other means resisting nationalism and its border regimes. It means showing empathy, staying human. It means believing, still, in a simple and radical principle: the equality of all human beings. It means saving lives at sea, supporting someone across the mountain trail, cooking a free meal, providing legal support, disrupting the machinery of deportation. This is anti-fascism; this is us.

Long live Renee Good; long live Alex Pretti.
